'Tokkaido', conecting Edo (Tokyo)-Kyoto for 500km, is one of the five main roads developed during the Edo-period (1603-1868). There were 53 inn towns on Tokkaido, and this obi's graphical mottif is one ordinary scene at the 4th inn town, Hodogaya-juku. A palanquin carrying a samurai is crossing the bridge, and Hodogaya-juku is showing up closer on the other side.Those inn town were crowded with travellers, looking for inns, resaurants, or entertainments.
